Batgirl is set to showcase the DCEU debut of In The Heights breakout star Leslie Grace in the leading role of Barbara Gordon. Directed by Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Grace will be joined by a stellar cast that includes Michael Keaton as Batman, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Jacob Scipio, and Brendan Fraser as the film's villain, Firefly.

The exact plot details are still being kept under wraps, but it is expected to tackle the origin story and the transition of Barbara into becoming Gotham's next protector. Keaton's involvement in the film also led many to believe that it would explore ramifications from Ezra Miller's The Flash

Set photos from Batgirl's production already teased the inclusion of Hugo Strange, potentially hinting that there will be more villains aside from Firefly in the movie. In addition, Keaton's new Batsuit and even his own Robin were also teased, meaning that his past as Gotham's hero could be explored as well.

Now, as the film is currently in production, new cast members have been added.

Batgirl Adds 3 Cast Members

The Hollywood Reporter shared that Rebecca Front, Corey Johnson, and Ethan Kai have joined the cast of Batgirl. The straight-to-streaming film is currently in production in Glasgow. Details about their roles are still being kept under wraps.

Front is best known for her work in Avenue 5, Poldark, and The Other One. The actress is also a BAFTA Award-winning veteran.

Johnson is known for appearing in supporting roles in different shows and movies, such as the Bourne franchise and the upcoming Morbius film from Sony and Marvel.

Meanwhile, Kai is a regular on Emmerdale Farm, and he has also appeared in shows such as Killing Eve and London Kills

Batgirl's Cast is Expanding

This latest development about Batgirl is a promising one since it could mean that these new cast members could play familiar characters in Gotham City.

At this stage, it is unknown if Leslie Grace's titular heroine will be alone in her heroic endeavors in Gotham. There's reason to believe that Keaton will serve as her mentor or even the "guy in the chair" in the Batcave, but it's possible that one or two of the new cast members will become Barbara's allies in the field or behind the scenes.

Among all the new cast members, Ethan Kai is the most plausible candidate. Kai could portray Keaton's Robin or anyone from the Bat-family. Meanwhile, Rebecca Front could play Barbara's mother, while Corey Johnson could play a GCPD officer who has ties to Barbara or a close ally of Firefly or even Hugo Strange

This is pure speculation at this point, but the possibilities are endless. Hopefully, as production continues in Glasgow, more details and sneak peeks about Batgirl will be revealed in order to shed some light on these new characters and the film's mysterious narrative.

Batgirl is expected to premiere on HBO Max sometime in 2022.
